Experience Hendrix Tour 2016

Experience Hendrix

In a demonstration of Jimi Hendrix’s lasting appeal a slew of top flight guitarists ditched their headline status and joined in a revue-styled show. The line from the master to players such as Jonny Lang (Wind Cries Mary), Kenny Wayne Shepherd (Voodoo Chile) and Eric Johnson (One Rainy Wish) is clear, but harder to imagine what Jimi would have made of Zakk Wylde’s hyper-speed bludgeoning of Little Wing. But the crowd loved it. Both Johnson and Shepherd stood out, having distilled Jimi’s sound as proper scions. Double Trouble’s Chris Layton kept superb time all night as guitars were played behind the back and with teeth, though none set alight. All this and Mato Nanji from Indigenous, Dweezil Zappa and Hendrix’s old army buddy, Billy Cox on bass.

Three hours of guitar pyrotechnics wrapped with Buddy Guy, pushing 80, still out of control and painting Red House the deepest blue.

Love or Confusion? A bit of both, but great.
